Marrakesh - Morocco
Nicknamed the "Southern Pearl", Marrakesh is a huge city surging with life. It has magnificent monuments. Just know that you should approach it, let its atmosphere soak into your soul, and hold onto this feeling. This city will appear as a jewel set in a natural case of High Atlas Mountains.
Along with Fez, it is the historic heart of Morocco and the name of the country originates from there,"Marocco".Ideally placed, the city is situated an equal distance from the Atlantic Coast and from the Sahara Desert. This strategic location explains its centuries of domination.
From XIth to the XVIIIth centuries, it was the Berber capital of an Empire reaching into Muslim Spain. It became the secondary capital in the XVIIth century.
The city was revitalized during the XXth century thanks to a burst in tourism.
The ambiance, the colors, the climate and let''s not forget about the desert are all nearby. Even the vegetation is luxurious: public parks, gardens, palm trees, fruit trees... are brought together in the aridity.
Last but not least, Marrakesh is a fascinating architectural work. The architecture from Marrakesh (with the Medina mosques and museums) will leave you intoxicated and captivated.
Your stay here will be unforgettable.
Two very different cities
The Medina: is an old city surrounded by ramparts. The historic poles start up again in this zone.
Gueliz: is the new city. Several kilometers of avenues connect Koutoubia Mosque to the Djebel Gueliz Mountain.
You will find great hotels, tasty restaurants, cozy cafes, various stores... And Hivernage is a small distinct calm and residential district in the south of Gueliz.
It's worth seeing
Within the Medina
The minaret of Koutoubia: this "Eiffel Tower" is used by all as a reference point. A grandeur considered one of the most beautiful monuments in Northern Africa.
Place Jmaa el Fna: in the heart of the Medina is an outdoor theatre that constantly has productions. When the salesmen move in around 5pm or 6pm, the parties begin: rich and enthusiastic animation, that always has friendly vibe. Mixed with: musicians, fortune-tellers, snake exhibitors, tattooers, dozens of mobile restaurants... Then the magic opera begins at sunset.
The souks:
dry-cleaners, basket makers, woodturners, ironworkers, shoemakers, jewelers, medicinal plants, spices, cosmetic products...
Bahia Palace: is a work of art that is a Moroccan masterpiece: well-endowed and abundant decorations
It''s impossible to list everything. Discover other less traveled parts of the city. Allow yourself to wander around and take your time. Feel the soul of Marrakesh and the residential customs. An unforgettable experience: making you "forget about the Medina" for that fleeting moment.
Gueliz
The Majorelle Garden: is luxurious with the atelier of painter Jacques Majorelle (where he takes pleasure in blue: The blue Majorelle). This is actually the property of Yves Saint-Laurent and Pierre Berger. Including a minimal amount but superb objects: collection of fashion designs, jewelery, fabric...
The covered markets
Natural argan: gastronomic cosmetic oil with multiple properties.
Hivernage: green vegetables and calm stretches to stroll.
Note: some tours in horse-drawn carriages (numerous) are often proposed. This offers you another way to discover the city.
The surrounding area...
The High Atlas Mountain: pthe two most gorgeous routes of the Moroccan mountain:
-The Tizi-n-Test Pass leads you to Taroudant.
-The Tizi-n-Tichla Pass brings you to Ouarzazat.
Ourika Valley: don''t miss this. One day is enough in order to encounter the Berber tribes and absorb what the Atlas Mountains have to offer you.
Oukaimeden: is the highest ski station in Africa and the most equipped. Possibly during winter...!
The Imlil Route: this fabulous excursion will lead you to the Toubkal National Park and its summit.
The Amizmiz Route: is worlds apart from the touristic circuits. It will remain a distinctly pleasant change of scenery!
